Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Residency Program
The neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative
medicine (NMM-OMM) residency programs through Mercy Health Partners
(MHP) are designed to provide the necessary skills, knowledge,
and opportunities to enable residents to successfully complete
the board certification process through the American Osteopathic
Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (AOBNMM), and develop into
a competent practitioner within the specialty.
Residents will spend an average of three half days per week in
the continuity clinic. Patients of all ages are seen through the
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine clinic, where the residents gain
experience in the care and management of their own panel of patients
and the daily operations of an office practice under the direct
supervision of the NMM-OMM residency program faculty.
Residents are scheduled intermittently to provide inpatient NMM-OMM
consultation service throughout the time of their training program.
During these scheduled rotations, the resident will participate
in the evaluation, treatment, documentation (including utilization
of the hospital’s electronic medical record and digital imaging
systems), and CPT coding. Residents are typically expected to follow
patients on whom they do the initial consultations. The MHP NMM-OMM
inpatient consultation service sees patients in almost all areas
of the institution, including:
- general medical
- general surgical
- gynecologic surgery
- orthopedics/neurology
- nephrology
- ICU/CCU
- obstetrics
- pediatric
- newborn nursery
- acute inpatient rehabilitation
- emergency department
Specialty rotations are scheduled to strengthen the resident’s
learning in the related sub-specialties. Instruction and training
in medicine, psychosocial development and practice management are
also integrated into the curriculum. Residents are also expected
to assist, within reason, in any ongoing relevant research during
the course of their training.
Residents should progressively improve their skills relative to
all of the seven core competencies as outlined by the AOA, which
include:
- medical knowledge
- patient care
- osteopathic philosophy and osteopathic manipulative medicine
- professionalism
- interpersonal and communication skills
- practice-based learning and improvement
- systems-based practice
