Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program
Obstetrics and Gynecology
Four-year Curriculum
OBGYN Procedure Stats
- The four-year residency-training program meets all the
requirements for certification by the American Osteopathic College
of Obstetrics and Gynecologists. The program is approved for nine
residents and offers a specialty internship track in OB/GYN, elective
rotations and additional GYN surgery training at area hospitals.
- With over 1,400 deliveries annually, the Special Delivery
Birth Center at MHP offers a wealth of clinical material, affording
OB/GYN residents the ability to achieve competency. The Special
Delivery Birth Center offers 14 private birth rooms and flexible
options for the patient’s best birth experience. Additionally,
Special Delivery has a dedicated operating room for those patients
needing Cesarean section. Rooms are equipped with the latest technology.
A team of experienced staff supports the patient and resident. Residents
learn from consultations with perinatologists, neonatologists, and
the case by case mentoring of the OB specialists. Child Birth Preparation
classes, Sibling Classes, and Breast Feeding Support Classes prepare
the parents for delivery and care of the newborn.
- Since the residency program’s inception in 1982,
21 residents have graduated from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
of MHP.
The following clinical experiences are integral components of the
residency:
- The OB High Risk Clinic allows residents to provide prenatal
care and delivery and co manage patients with maternal fetal medicine
specialists. The infant mortality rate in Muskegon County has dramatically
decreased as a result of this clinic, operated by MHP.
- In the GYN Clinic, residents gain experience in managing
patients in the areas of gynecology, gynecological surgery, family
planning, human sexuality, genetics, reproductive endocrinology,
infertility, oncology and psychology.
- The faculty continuously reviews and revises the curriculum
to meet the changes in medical technology, hospital staff, community
and education resources and the needs of the residents. The hospital
and medical staff are committed to providing high quality programs,
which enable graduates to enter confidently into the practice of
obstetrics and gynecology.
MHP is a member of the Michigan State University State Wide Campus
System. Through monthly education programs, this affiliation expands
and improves training and learning opportunities.
