| MERCY HEALTH PARTNERS’ SURGEON
TOPS IN STATE
IN DA VINCI SACROCOLPOPEXY SURGERIES
Three MHP physicians now trained in da Vinci surgical procedure
Muskegon, Mich. – July 14, 2009 – Mercy Health
Partners (MHP) today announced that Dr. Samir I. Hamati,
FACOG, FACS, a gynecological surgeon at MHP, has been recognized
as the leader in the state of Michigan in sacrocolpopexy
surgeries using the da Vinci Surgical System. Hamati has
performed 55 sacrocolpopexy surgeries on the da Vinci Surgical
System since it was unveiled at MHP in Spring 2006. MHP also
announced that Dr. Lourice David, Dr. Kristen Lawrence and
Dr. Kristina VanderMark have completed training on the da
Vinci Surgical System and will begin performing surgeries.
The da Vinci
Surgical System is a robotic
surgical system designed to facilitate complex surgery using
a minimally
invasive approach, allowing some intricate procedures through incisions as
small as a button on a man’s shirt. The system is controlled by a surgeon
from a console, which translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements
into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments during surgery.
Sacrocolpopexy
is the" Gold Standard " procedure for the management
of uterine and vaginal prolapse with success rate of 90-100
percent. Prolapse (or falling) of any pelvic floor organ
(vagina, bladder or rectum) occurs when the connective tissues
or muscles within the body cavity are weak and unable to
hold the pelvis in its natural orientation. More than 200,000
cases of uterine and vaginal vault prolapse are surgically
treated each year in the U.S.
“The
real benefit to performing surgeries using the da Vinci system is that many
of our patients are experiencing a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less risk
of infection, less blood loss, fewer transfusions, less scarring, faster recovery
and a quicker return to normal daily activities,” Hamati said.
The
addition of David, Lawrence and VanderMark on the da Vinci
system enhance MHP’s already exceptional robotic surgery
team, said Dr. F. Remington Sprague, Chief Medical Officer.
“Through
Dr. Hamati’s leadership, MHP has become one of the
leading hospitals in the state in offering its patients outstanding
care using the latest surgical technology,” Sprague
added.
