Lab Instructions

MHP Patient Instructions for 24 hour urine collection

Purpose: Your doctor has ordered a urine chemistry test that requires you to save all urine for 24 hours.

Instructions:

  1. MHP Laboratory will give you a special container to collect the urine. A preservative may be in the container. Do not throw away the preservative. Preservatives can be caustic or toxic. Be very careful to not spill the preservative on you or anything else. If you do spill the preservative then immediately wash with large amounts of water. Refrigerate the container during collection. The urine must be kept cold.
  2. To begin your 24-hour collection, empty bladder and flush urine down the toilet. Record the date and time on label attached to your 24-hour urine container.
  3. For the next 24 hours add ALL urine into the bottle. Refrigerate bottle between additions.
  4. End collection 24 hours after start time by emptying bladder and adding final sample to the collection container.
  5. Record the ending date and time on label attached to your 24-hour urine container.
  6. Return your urine specimen to Mercy Health Partners Lab as soon as possible.
