Weight Management Information and Ideas

Living with Diabetes

Listed below are the ways the different types of diabetes are managed. This is followed by a list of insulin delivery methods, which explains what’s new, what we can expect in the future, and what is currently available.

Type 1

  • Blood sugar testing
  • Insulin shots
  • Record keeping
  • Kidney, pancreas, or islet cell transplants

Type 2

  • Blood sugar testing
  • Meal planning
  • Weight loss
  • Daily exercise
  • Oral medications
  • Insulin injections
  • Kidney transplant

Gestational

  • Blood sugar testing
  • Special meal plans
  • Scheduled activity
  • Insulin injections

Other forms of insulin delivery

Researchers are always looking for ways to improve the insulin delivery. Currently scientists have come up with the following options:

  • Insulin shots- traditional
  • Insulin pump- is a small device that can be worn on a belt or kept in a pocket. It is connected to a tube that goes just under the skin that continuously trickles a small amount of insulin throughout the day. Insulin pumps can be programmed by the user to deliver more insulin at certain times of the day, like mealtime.
  • Insulin sprays- allows a patient to inhale insulin when needed eliminating the need for a shot. This delivery method is not yet available or widely accepted.
  • Insulin patches- could be worn by a patient, and would allow insulin to enter the body through the skin, much like the medical patches used for birth control Again, this is not yet available or widely accepted
  • Insulin pills- would allow the patient to ingest insulin. This method is still in the research and development phase.
