Kidney Care

A Leader in Kidney Care

The Mercy Regional Kidney Institute provides comprehensive renal and nephrology expertise to the Mercy Health Partners service area. The Institute has partnered with Gambro Healthcare to provide dialysis services.

The incidence of end-stage renal disease (a disease associated with the kidneys) in the West Michigan region continues to grow at a rate of 10 percent annually. The prevalence of end-stage renal disease in Muskegon County alone is 34 percent above the Michigan average. Establishing the Mercy Regional Kidney Institute was a direct response to this growing problem. The Institute’s activities focus on:

  • Improving diagnostic techniques for all age groups, but particularly within the growing elderly population;
  • Increasing the life expectancy of those at risk, before disease strikes
  • Providing dialysis services for those experiencing kidney failure

In short, the Institute’s work today helps patients enjoy a higher quality of life, and anticipates and responds to nephrology and renal care needs of tomorrow.

Physicians, qualified staff, accessible facilities and comprehensive services geared to individual patients are trademarks of the Institute. Services include inpatient nephrology, acute and outpatient hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, plasmapheresis and intra-dialytic parenteral nutrition (IDPN) supplement services. A key priority is providing information - particularly educating the public about lifestyle changes that can prevent the need for renal services.

Dialysis Specialists

A five-station satellite unit in Ludington opened in 1995 in conjunction with Memorial Medical Center. In January of 1997, the Institute celebrated the opening of a 12-station outpatient hemodialysis center in Grand Haven.

In addition to dialysis services provided by Gambro Healthcare at sites in Muskegon, Grand Haven and Ludington, the Mercy Regional Kidney Institute operates a mobile unit with a team of specialists who provide dialysis services to patients at other hospitals in an area that spans from Holland to Ludington.
