Orthopedics
When
even the simplest activities of daily life become a painful burden,
total joint replacement can be a blessing. Total joint replacement
can give you a new lease on life, allowing you to enjoy normal activities
and light recreation without having to suffer for it later.
Most orthopaedic specialists consider joint replacement to be the
best method for treating the pain and mobility loss due to severe
arthritis. Joint replacement has allowed hundreds of thousands of
people with arthritis worldwide to get back on their feet and enjoy
their life again.
"At MHP, we promote an attitude of healthiness, eliminating
the crippled frame of mind and focus on wellness, motivation, and
independence," says Karen Tovey, RN.
"Our goal is to return each patient to an active lifestyle, free
of pain, as quickly as possible." As an orthopedic patient, you have
more freedom and are encouraged to be in control of your recovery.
Before surgery, you will attend a training session where you will
view a video and receive information on what to expect before, during,
and after your joint replacement surgery. You are strongly encouraged
to have a friend or family member who will act as a coach as you
go through the joint replacement process, beginning with the training
session and continuing through your recovery once you get home.
After leaving the hospital you will need someone at home to assist
with dressing, getting meals, and other everyday activities for
the first couple of weeks.
Instead of wearing hospital gowns, on the second day after surgery
you may wear your own clothes. A block of rooms has been reserved
for joint replacement patients to enable you to be in a supportive
setting with other patients undergoing similar surgeries. You will
participate in planned exercise therapy, both individually and as
a group, to gain your mobility and independence.
Additionally, the staff at MHP will seek to provide
you with optimal pain control; around the clock pain management
to achieve steady levels, with minimal to no ups and downs.
