Other orthopedic services available include specialized transitional
care and rehabilitation at McAuley Place Living Center for orthopedic
patients who are not entirely ready for independent living following
surgery. Outpatient and homecare rehabilitation programs are available
as well.
Rehabilitation professionals customize programs to meet the preventive
and restorative needs of all patients.
Excellent facilities, equipment and medical and support staff create
a clinical environment that maximizes the recovery potential of
each orthopedic patient. There are three convenient
locations to meet the needs of individuals.
Services are available to individuals, other hospitals and local
employers.
Orthotics and Prosthetics
A comprehensive program including the fabrication, fitting, functional
use of custom orthotic and prosthetic appliances. The patient is
offered a range of support and educational services to enhance lifestyles.
Orthotic Rehabilitation
Diabetic Footwear Management
Weight bearing and non weight bearing braces and sandals provided
by the Rehabilitation Center offer unique benefits over traditional
footwear for patients with diabetic ulcers. The braces and sandals
are made using weight bearing techniques which speed the healing
process by alleviating pressure ulcers in even the most difficult
areas.
Benefits:
- Light weight
- Allows dressing changes
- Enables ambulation
- Assists healing
Healing sandals and healing braces are the orthotics used. Each
orthotic is custom fabricated to ensure the patients weight,
physiognomy and gait are taken into account. The devices are effective
in off-weighting an ulcer and evenly distributing pressure on the
entire sole of the foot. If necessary, orthotics can be modified
without difficulty throughout the healing process.
Arthritic Footwear Management
Reducing inflammation, relieving pain, providing comfort and support,
and improving the gait and balance of patients are all goals of
the Mercy Health Partners Arthritic Footwear Management
Department at the Rehabilitation Center.
Foot orthoses are light weight, absorb shock and stress and align
the foot. Shoe modifications include wedges, rocker/rollerosle,
Velcro enclosures and flairs. All devices are custom fabricated
by a certified pedorthist to meet each patients needs. Our
pedorthist is on site and available to work with patients and their
physicians.
Management of Heel Pain Syndrome
Planta Faciitis/Heel Spur is a common problem among people who
are active in sports as well as those who lead sedentary lives.
Although the cause of plantar fasciitis is basically unknown, the
belief is that tension in the plantar fascia causes an overload.
This produces inflammation, usually at the point which the fascia
is attached to the heel bone and results in pain. Contributing factors
are thought to be flat feet, high arched foot, poor shoe support,
a change in activity level, or obesity.
Many treatments have been recommended for plantar fasciitis. The
most common are: rest, ice, medication, cortisone shots in the heel,
physical therapy, heel pads, special shoes, arch supports, taping
and surgery.
Certified medical professionals at the Mercy Health Partners
Rehabilitation Center will work with patients and their physicians
on a plan to alleviate the pain.
